In A Dark, Dark, Wood by Ruth Ware
When I picked up a copy of In A Dark, Dark, Wood by Ruth Ware from Blue Willow Bookshop, I was immediately drawn to the dark and eery cover. In the adolescent and adult portion of my life, I have been drawn to a lot of dark literature. I'm not really sure why? I guess it aligns with a lot of the shows that I like to watch, like Law and Order: SVU and Snapped. So, when I found this book, and I read the description on the back, I was instantly intrigued. The cherry on top of this delicious ice cream sundae of a book, was that it was part of Reese Witherspoon's book club! I absolutely love her! So, I just knew that I had to read it.
In A Dark, Dark, Wood takes place at a cabin home in the middle of nowhere, where Nora has been invited to a hen party for a childhood friend whom she hasn't spoken to in ten years. Nora and her friend Nina are skeptical about attending in the first place, but eventually agree to go. After a couple of awkward, uncomfortable, and spooky nights in this house in the woods, Nora is not feeling great about her decision to attend and wants to leave. Especially after Clare (the bride to be) tells Nora that it is James (Nora's ex boyfriend) that she is marrying. Surrounded by people she doesn't know or particularly like, Nora is very much on edge and not wanting to be at the hen party any longer, but once another guest leaves before she gets the chance to do so, she feels obligated to stay. What ends up happening in the nights to come, will make Nora wish that she had left early, or better yet, never even come at all.
This is a great read if you are looking for a mystery type book. I personally thought that it would be more terrifying of a read than it was. I finished the book the other day, and after sitting with how everything ended and what I had just read, I really enjoyed the twists and turns of the book itself and I am glad with how it was written. I definitely recommend this book, especially for all of the mystery lovers.
