My First Book of 2020

The first book that I have read in the year of 2020 was Dear Sweet Pea by Julie Murphy. You may recognize the name of this author. She is known for writing the book Puddin', which is what the Netflix original movie Dumplin was based off of. If you liked that movie, you are sure to love her YA book, Dear Sweet Pea.

The book is about a girl nicknamed Sweet Pea and how she is dealing with her parents splitting up. Not only did her parents split up and are in the middle of getting a divorce, but, her dad purchased the house two houses down from the house they all used to live in together. And, he wanted his daughter to feel at home when she spent her time with him, so he made it look identical to their original home both inside and outside. Sweet Pea deals with this drama by hanging out with her cat Cheese and her best friend Oscar. They tell each other everything. Except, Sweet Pea has a secret that she's been keeping from everyone. The woman that lives in between her parents, Miss Flora, has gone out of town and has asked her to mail her the letters for the newspaper advice column that she writes every week. Except, when Sweet Pea recognizes the handwriting on one of the letters, she tries responding to it herself and then sends the responded letter to the newspaper editor. Keeping this secret from her friends and family may feel like she's doing the right thing, but sometimes that comes back to bite you.

I highly recommend this book for any young adult reader or any adult who is interested in young adult literature. It is a pretty quick read and the story is filled with heart; moments of joy and laughter. With each chapter, you are eager to see what happens to Sweet Pea next.
